Class Information

Halau Ka Lei Kukui Hi'ilani is a traditional educational school that combines learning of Hawaiian language, culture, history, and arts for a deeper appreciation and understanding of the mele we sing and move to. Our haumana have different backgrounds, rich experiences, and are at various levels of training. Dancers and aspiring dancers of all ages are welcome. We offer classes for all levels of knowledge. Students with prior Hula experience will be assessed and placed in the appropriate level class.


We also offer ukulele instruction. See class details below.

A development and leadership level class. Students are ready for the next level of hula practice. Adults must pass Level 1 skills and knowledge, volunteer leader, instructor invitation, and approval. Teens must pass Level 2 youth skills and knowledge, youth volunteer for other classes.

Foundational class ideal for newcomers, beginners, low impact workout, and seniors to learn and master the following:

  • posturing, footwork, and handwork
  • Hawaiian sayings and proverbs
  • Hawaiian chants and songs
  • Ancient and modern choreography

Become a shining light ambassador of aloha. This free 'Ohana and 'Olelo meetup focuses on establishing effective and loving communication through the practice of biblical and Hawaiian family values and language.

Youth Hula

A foundational level 1 youth class for youth and newcomers who are being evaluated for class placement.

Foundational level ideal with approval from instructor. Pre-requisite: Attendance in PAPA HUA KUKUI for a minimum of 1 equivalent year and passing of Level 1 Youth skills and knowledge.

Beginning to intermediate hula focused on the modern style. Hawaiian chanting, ancient hula, and cultural arts are not included in this class

Family Hula (parents and their kids)

Beginning hula class where parents and kids can learn basic hula steps and choreography to share and enjoy with their family and friends.

Beginner Hula (kids only class)

Start moving those little hands and feet. Your child will enjoy the music and boost their self-confidence. Foundational level class for kids focusing on basic hula steps and choreography to build coordination, balance, and self-confidence.

Hula Basics Training Workout - Class Via Zoom

For beginning to advance level students who want a strong foundation to accelerate their mastery of hula techniques while taking care of their body, soul, and spirit. This class focuses on learning and mastering the following:
  • posturing, footwork, and handwork
  • building strength and stamina
  • achieving grace and expression
  • using hula to care for the whole person

For ages 11 and up.
